World's Smallest Malware Scanners get Smaller. Wuzzup and BugBopper still deliver top speed, top detection.
BugBopper v1.1.0.8131 and Wuzzup v1.4.0.8131 have shipped. About 16,800 malware executables also began shipping today, so users need industrial-strength detection more than ever.
These new releases of these fast malware scanners for Windows platforms take a remarkable plunge in size, shrinking by over 550 Kb, making the world's smallest anti-malware products even smaller.
Wuzzup and BugBopper's unique and innovative scanning method greatly reduces both program size and detection database size, while speeding the scanning process and reducing CPU utilization. Once the first full scan of any machine is completed, these programs re-scan at blinding speed, on many machines up to thousands of files per second, allowing a full scan to be completed in a minute or two. New Malware Comes at a Blistering Pace
New malware is being created at a blistering pace. A decade ago, several new malware products were written each day. But on the average day this year, we've seen about 3,200 new named malware products, and 16,800 new executable malware files.
In the graph to the right, daily production of malware files by year is shown. Each bar represents the number of files that were created on an average day in that year. For the current year, the value is based on the number of days through Friday, Sep 03, 2010 .
This growth is not smooth and linear. It is geometric, with little change until last year, when the pace began to surge. [more...] Much of this malware arrives as drive-by downloads, from malicious sites. Malware distribution sites are being created at a rate of at least 2197 new urls per day. [more...]
Scanner Failure
Using dozens of scanners, we scanned 91,162 files that one or more of these products reported as malware. Each scanner was updated, if an update was available, on the day of the scan. Less than 1% of all files are detected by all scanners. About 40% of files are detected by only half of the scanners used. The average scanner in these tests detected just 62% of the malware files, with a range of results from a low of about 30% to a high of about 80%. Something is wrong with this picture! [more...]
A New Approach
Scanner design has been governed by traditions that go back 30 years, and doesn't address today's malware problems. Many users are aware of the Zero Day Problem, the Guessing Problem, and the Obesity Problem, but most are unaware of the False Alarm Problem, the Volume Problem, and the Lousy Detection Problem. Such problems have combined, and lead us to this conclusion: today, nearly every single machine is infected with something. Our different approach solves these problems. [more...]
Bigger/Smaller than a Breadbox
The growth of new malware puts demands on every anti-malware product vendor to capture, analyze, store, and use information on all new malware. Fortunately, our malware acquisition, analysis, and reporting systems are automated. And because of our new approaches to malware detection, even though our detection rate is the highest of any product, our footprint is the smallest. In contrast, this web site offers one of the largest malware encyclopedias: As of Friday, Sep 03, 2010, the site includes 2,558,576 pages describing named malware "products" and 8,540,436 pages of analyses of malware executables.
Wuzzup? BugBopper?
Which tool is right for you?
Wuzzup and BugBopper are similar products. They share a code base, and are identical in their remarkable malware detection ability and speed. The small differences:
- Wuzzup is free; BugBopper is a commercial product.
- Wuzzup is designed to discover malware, not remove it; BugBopper can kill all the malware you want, quarantining a copy first, and can always restore from quarantine any file it has killed.
Both Products:
- Are compatible with all anti-virus and anti-spyware products.
- Identify all unknown executables, and transmits them to our lab for free analysis.
- Boast higher detection rate than any other product. Finds problems that other products miss.
- Check running processes, autostart files, executable files, cookies.
